Description:

A very fine and scarce pair of late Qing Chinese cloisonne horse censers with detachable gilt copper manes. The decoration consists of fluid scrolling patterns most likely derived from more angular archaic motifs. Superb craftsmanship with a precise ‘mirroring’ of the patterns on either side of a line which bisects each horse lengthwise, as well being identical horse to horse. As later examples of this design are mostly of degraded craftsmanship, it is likely that these horses date to the first origins of this popular motif. Both horses have very little minor surface roughness to the enamels — along with age and use related wear, mostly to the underside. Gilt is in good condition and remains vibrant. Measures 12"L x 4"W x 8 5/8"H. Condition: missing censer lids, please see all photos. Contact AAG for more detailed information if needed.
